Parenting Wisdom

By Palm Beach Doulas

Parents sharing a moment with their baby
  • There is no such thing as a perfect parent. You will not get it right all the time. There are millions of ways to be perfect for your child.
  • You can only do the best you can with the information that you have at the time, based on how you feel. Be gentle with yourself.
  • Self-care is not just something that you need for you. You are also teaching your children how to respect themselves as well.
  • Teacher children by example. They will follow your actions far more than your words. Actions are proof.
  • I understand ages and stages. We cannot expect a newborn to be independent. And we should be letting our eight-year-olds tie their own shoes.
  • If you want your children to take responsibility for their actions, notice if you do as well
  • When you give children children what they need when they are young. Independent, they actually grow to be more independent and confident as they age
  • Set small milestones and then celebrate every time you meet one.
  • Know the difference between a need and want. But always validate both. “I know you wanted that cookie for dinner. It’s so frustrating to not get that cookie for dinner. Instead of “you can have a cookie if you’re a good kid. They are learning how to process emotions. Learn yourself so that you can let them.
  • It’s not your job to make your child happy. It’s your job to keep them safe.
